Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has been toppled as the most followed person on social media with American singer Taylor Swift taking the top spot.

According to a report by Madrid agency Apple Tree Communications, Ronaldo has 238 million followers compared to Swift who has 246 million followers. The report takes into account followers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. Singers Katy Perry, Selena Gomez and Rihanna follow Ronaldo with 219 million, 205 million and 190 million, respectively.

According to the study the top social media influencers in the world are young women from the United States with 13 of the top 20 personalities in the world of music.

According to ESPN FC, Ronaldo became the first athlete to surpass 200 million followers on social media in February of this year. His numbers put him past Barcelona rival Lionel Messi as well as beyond the combined total of basketball stars LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry.

Analystics site Hookit.com claim Ronaldo has added 5.4 million followers in the past 30 days. Last season Ronaldo won a second Champions League title with Real Madrid and in the summer he led Portugal to Euro 2016 glory.
